The Plastic Smart Cities Pilot Project project, implemented in Surat Thani City and Koh Samui, aims to reduce plastic pollution and enhance ocean ecosystem resilience, aligning with the “No Plastic in Nature” initiative by the WWF. In collaboration with the WWF, the project seeks to boost recycling capacity to cut plastic leakage by 30% from 2020 levels and reach zero leakage by 2025.
Key activities include strengthening local waste management by upskilling small-scale material recovery facility (MRF) operators and maximizing recyclable materials for market. Community-led waste banks will be established to support MRFs, promote source segregation, and build sustainable waste management capacity. Additionally, a Plastic-Free Campus Manual will be created to educate schools and communities on reducing and recycling waste.
By linking MRFs and community waste banks, the project promotes fair distribution of recycling profits across the supply chain, empowering local communities and schools in environmental stewardship.
